Frequently Asked Questions
Why does networking matter more for AI data centers?
AI training links thousands of GPUs that must exchange data constantly, so the network can limit how fast a cluster works. Operators therefore add a high-speed back-end fabric, built on Ethernet or InfiniBand, alongside the front-end network that connects users, storage and the internet.
What kinds of companies are listed?
Five groups: switching and fabric vendors (NVIDIA, Arista, Cisco, HPE Networking, Nokia), network silicon and AI interconnect makers (Broadcom, Marvell, Astera Labs, Credo), optics, cabling and interconnect suppliers (Coherent, Lumentum, Corning, Ciena), network software and observability tools (SONiC, NetBox Labs, Kentik), and standards bodies.
What is the difference between Ethernet and InfiniBand for AI clusters?
InfiniBand is a high-performance fabric with a long history in supercomputing, and NVIDIA supplies it. Ethernet is the dominant data center standard, and the Ultra Ethernet Consortium is defining an open Ethernet-based architecture for AI and HPC. Vendor sites present both as options, so test with your own workloads.
What happened to Juniper Networks?
HPE closed its roughly $14 billion acquisition of Juniper Networks in early July 2025, and Juniper's website now redirects to HPE, where the networking business operates as HPE Networking.
What is SONiC?
SONiC is an open-source network operating system that runs on switches from several hardware vendors. It is linked in the software group and is maintained as an open project.
Does this page cover power, cooling and colocation?
No. See Top Data Center Power Companies, Data Center Networking Companies and Colocation Service Providers on this site.
How current is this page?
Links were checked on 4 November 2026. Arista returned 406, and Cisco, Dell, Supermicro, Astera Labs, Marvell, Credo, Corning, Amphenol, Ciena and the Open Compute Project returned 403 to automated checks, which looks like bot blocking. The HPE home page did not respond, so those links may need a manual click. Descriptions follow each company's own pages and are not independent rankings or benchmarks.
