Frequently Asked Questions

Why is cooling becoming harder for data centers?

AI servers pack far more power into each rack, and almost all of it turns into heat. Air cooling struggles at high rack densities, so operators add liquid cooling, such as cold plates on chips, immersion tanks and coolant distribution units, alongside traditional chillers and air handlers.

What kinds of cooling companies are listed?

Four groups: infrastructure and thermal-management suppliers (Vertiv, Schneider Electric, Trane, Carrier), liquid and direct-to-chip specialists (CoolIT, LiquidStack, ZutaCore, Iceotope), heat-rejection and cooling-tower makers (BAC, EVAPCO, SPX, Alfa Laval), and research and standards bodies (ASHRAE, Uptime Institute, Open Compute Project).

What is the difference between direct-to-chip and immersion cooling?

Direct-to-chip cooling pipes liquid to cold plates attached to processors, while the rest of the server is still air cooled. Immersion cooling submerges servers in a non-conductive fluid, either in a single phase or with a boiling two-phase fluid. Vendor sites describe both approaches.

Which cooling companies have been acquired recently?

Company announcements and filings report that Trane Technologies completed its acquisition of LiquidStack on 3 March 2026, Eaton completed its purchase of Boyd Thermal on 12 March 2026, and Ecolab completed its roughly $4.75 billion purchase of CoolIT Systems on 2 July 2026. Schneider Electric agreed in 2024 to buy a 75% stake in Motivair. Check each company's announcements for terms.

What is PUE and how does cooling affect it?

Power usage effectiveness is the ratio of total facility energy to IT equipment energy. Cooling is one of the largest non-IT loads, so more efficient cooling lowers PUE. The Green Grid created the metric.

Does this page cover power and colocation?

No. See Top Data Center Power Companies for power infrastructure, generation and utilities, and Colocation Service Providers for operators that rent space, power and cooling.

How current is this page?

Links were checked on 4 November 2026. Vertiv, Schneider Electric, Motivair, Asetek, Submer, GRC, Accelsius, ASHRAE, the Open Compute Project and Berkeley Lab returned 403 to automated checks, which looks like bot blocking, and Eaton did not respond, so those links may need a manual click. Deal dates come from company announcements and filings and may change. Descriptions are not independent rankings or performance comparisons.
