Frequently Asked Questions
What is a real-time system?
A system whose correctness depends on both the result and the time it is produced; a late answer is a wrong answer.
How do I choose an RTOS?
Choose by timing guarantees (hard or soft), hardware and architecture support, certification needs, licence, tooling and community. FreeRTOS and Zephyr are common open-source starts, while safety-critical products often need a vendor with certification evidence.
Can Linux be real-time?
Yes. With the PREEMPT_RT patches, now part of the mainline kernel, Linux can meet soft and many firm real-time needs, and Xenomai adds a dual-kernel approach. Very strict hard real-time or safety-certified work usually still uses a dedicated RTOS.
Which products are renamed or ending?
Azure RTOS is now Eclipse ThreadX, and Arm has announced an end-of-life timeline for Mbed OS. Both are labelled in their entries.
What is a real-time operating system?
An OS that guarantees tasks meet timing deadlines. FreeRTOS, Zephyr, RTEMS and QNX are common, and PREEMPT_RT adds real-time features to Linux.
What is AUTOSAR?
An automotive software architecture standard for ECUs.
How current is this list?
Links were checked in October 2026. Vendors that block automated checks are kept and may need a manual click; renamed, acquired and end-of-life products are labelled. Certification claims belong to each vendor, so confirm them with the vendor.
