Frequently Asked Questions
What is backup and recovery software?
Software that copies data and system state to separate storage on a schedule and restores it after loss, corruption, failure or attack, often with deduplication, encryption and reporting.
What is the 3-2-1 rule?
Keep three copies of your data on two different media with one copy off-site; many teams now add an immutable or air-gapped copy to survive ransomware.
What is the difference between backup and disaster recovery?
Backup preserves copies of data; disaster recovery restores whole systems and services within defined recovery time and recovery point objectives, often with replication.
Do I need to back up SaaS data?
Yes. SaaS providers protect their platform but not necessarily your data, so services such as Microsoft 365 Backup and Druva fill the gap.
How do I back up Kubernetes?
Use tools designed for clusters, such as Velero or Veeam Kasten, to protect resources and persistent volumes; see the Cloud-native Data Protection page.
What does the 2026 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Backup and Data Protection Platforms say?
The Magic Quadrant for Backup and Data Protection Platforms was published on 29 June 2026. Veeam says it was named a Leader for the 10th consecutive time and positioned highest for Ability to Execute, Commvault says it was named a Leader for the 15th consecutive year, Cohesity says it is a Leader for the seventh consecutive year and Druva says it is a Leader for the second consecutive year. Virtualization Review reported that Rubrik was positioned furthest on the Completeness of Vision axis. I could not read Gartner's report or confirm other vendors' placements.
What cloud-native disaster recovery services are there?
Azure Site Recovery and AWS Elastic Disaster Recovery are the cloud providers' own services. Microsoft's what's-new page lists Update Rollup 83 from February 2026 and says it supports the latest five rollup versions (N-4). The AWS Elastic Disaster Recovery document history lists recovery plans (18 August 2026) and AWS Graviton source servers (25 September 2026), and notes that AWS discontinued CloudEndure Disaster Recovery on 29 September 2025.
