Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Kubernetes need its own backup?

Backups must capture both cluster resources, such as namespaces and configuration, and the persistent data of stateful apps, and restore them consistently, often into another cluster.

Is Velero enough?

Velero is a widely used open-source tool for backup, restore and migration. Commercial products add policy management, application-aware backups, reporting and support.

What about disaster recovery?

Backup restores data after loss, while disaster recovery adds replication and failover to meet recovery time and point objectives. Zerto and Portworx cover this area.

Which entries changed?

Dell PowerProtect, HYCU and others link to their current pages. IBM Spectrum Protect Plus is now IBM Storage Protect Plus, and Kasten K10 is now Veeam Backup for Kubernetes.

Are the links checked?

Links were checked when this page was updated. Dell PowerProtect now redirects to a store page, and HYCU's Kubernetes page now redirects to a general data protection page. HPE Zerto blocked scripts but loaded in a browser.

Is Velero a CNCF project?

Yes, at the Sandbox level. The CNCF projects page lists Velero, which backs up and moves Kubernetes applications along with their storage volumes, as accepted on 11 March 2026. Broadcom contributed the project.

How current is this page?

Links were checked in October 2026. HPE's Zerto page did not respond to automated checks, so its link may need a manual click. Vendors rename products often, and descriptions follow each vendor's own pages rather than independent evaluations.
