What Is Process Modeling?

9 entries

Process modeling is drawing a business process as a diagram so that people and tools share one description of its steps, roles, decisions and events. BPMN is the widely used standard notation, with DMN for decisions and CMMN for cases, and modeled processes can be documented, simulated or executed on a process engine. Descriptions below follow each vendor's or publisher's own pages and are not rankings.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is process modeling?

Process modeling is representing a business process as a diagram, with its steps, roles, decisions and events, so it can be documented, analyzed, simulated or automated.

What is BPMN?

BPMN (Business Process Model and Notation) is the Object Management Group's standard graphical notation for business processes. Version 2.0.2 is the current published specification on the OMG site, and engines such as Camunda, Flowable and Operaton can execute BPMN models. See the BPM Software page.

What is the difference between BPMN, DMN and CMMN?

BPMN models processes, DMN models decisions such as rules and decision tables, and CMMN models cases with less predictable flows. All three are OMG standards. See the BRMS and Case Management pages.

Which process modeling tool should I choose?

Start with the notation and the audience. Free options such as Camunda Modeler, Bizagi Modeler and draw.io suit individuals and small teams, while suites such as SAP Signavio, ARIS and Bizzdesign add collaboration, governance and repositories. Check whether the tool exports standard BPMN XML so models are portable.

Can process models be executed?

Yes. BPMN models can be deployed to process engines such as Camunda, Flowable, Operaton and Bonita. See the Workflow Engines and BPM Software pages.

How does process modeling relate to process discovery?

Discovery finds out how a process actually runs, using interviews, process mining and task mining, and modeling records the result in a shared notation. See the Process Discovery page.
