Frequently Asked Questions
What is process mining?
Process mining uses event logs from business systems to reconstruct how processes actually run, showing the real paths, bottlenecks, rework and deviations, and comparing them with the intended process. It turns data your systems already record into process insight.
What is the difference between process mining and task mining?
Process mining analyzes event logs from systems such as ERP and CRM to reconstruct end-to-end process flows. Task mining captures user desktop activity to understand how individual tasks are done. Many vendors offer both.
What data does process mining need?
An event log with a case identifier, an activity name and a timestamp for each event. XES is a standard event-log format, and tools such as PM4Py, ProM and Disco can read event logs.
What is object-centric process mining and OCEL?
Traditional process mining assumes each event belongs to one case. Object-centric process mining lets one event relate to several objects, such as an order, an item and an invoice. OCEL 2.0 is an event-log format for this approach.
What is the difference between process mining and process discovery or BPM?
Process mining is data-driven and starts from event logs. Process discovery is the broader activity of finding how work is done, including interviews and task mining, and BPM covers modelling and improving processes. See the Process Discovery and Business Process Management (BPM) Software pages.
Is there open-source process mining software?
Yes. PM4Py is an open-source Python library, and ProM is an academic framework listed through ProcessMining.org. Check licence and support terms before adopting.
How do I choose process mining software?
Compare connectors to your source systems such as ERP and CRM, task mining and conformance checking, support for object-centric logs, simulation, action and automation features, data security, and pricing. Start with one process and clean event data.
Which additional references does this page add?
The section 'Open Process Mining' lists PM4Py, ProM Tools, Apromore, IEEE XES Standard, OCEL Standard.
How current is this page?
Outbound links were checked on 3 November 2026. EdgeVerve returns 403 and KYP returns a redirect response to automated checks; they are kept and may need a manual click. pm4py 2.7.23.11 was confirmed on PyPI on that date. Vendors rename, merge and retire products often, so confirm details on the vendor's site.
