Frequently Asked Questions
What is payroll software?
Payroll software calculates pay, taxes and deductions, produces payslips, pays employees and files statutory returns. It may be a stand-alone product, a module of an HCM suite, or part of a bundled HR and benefits service.
What is the difference between payroll software, a PEO and an employer of record?
Payroll software is a tool your own team runs for employees you employ directly. A PEO shares employment responsibilities for your US staff and bundles payroll, benefits and compliance. An employer of record legally employs workers on your behalf in another country, so you can hire without setting up a local entity.
How do I choose payroll software?
Match it to where your staff work. Check statutory coverage for each country or state, tax filing, integrations with your HR, time and accounting systems, contractor payments, reporting and audit trails, and whether you need a local compliance partner for international teams.
What changed among payroll vendors recently?
Paychex announced on 14 April 2025 that it had completed its acquisition of Paycor, and Thoma Bravo completed its roughly $12.3 billion acquisition of Dayforce on 4 February 2026. Mosey, a state and local compliance platform, announced in April 2026 that it is joining Gusto.
What is the Rippling and Deel litigation?
Rippling sued Deel in March 2025, alleging that Deel paid a Rippling employee to collect confidential information; Deel denies this. According to Bloomberg Law and TheNextWeb, on 25 September 2026 a federal judge in San Francisco declined to bar a key witness and to revisit his February ruling that let Rippling's racketeering and trade-secret claims proceed, and sent some of Deel's counterclaims to arbitration. I found no settlement, so the case is ongoing, and buyers should check the latest reporting.
How current is this directory?
Links were checked in October 2026. A few vendor sites returned 403 to my automated checker, which looks like bot blocking, and are marked in their cards. Vendors change products and pricing often, so confirm details on each vendor's own site.
