What a Meta-Harness Is
2 entriesA harness is the code wrapped around a model that turns it into an agent: the loop, tools, context handling and permissions. A meta-harness sits one level above and treats harnesses as swappable parts, so one session layer can run Claude Code, Codex or a custom agent and apply the same controls to all of them. The term is also used for a second idea, research that automatically optimizes the harness code itself; a later section covers that meaning.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a meta-harness for AI agents?
A layer above agent harnesses. Where a harness such as Claude Code wraps a model into an agent, a meta-harness lets you run, swap, combine, govern and share several harnesses through one session layer.
How is it different from an agent framework?
Frameworks help you build an agent. A meta-harness mainly runs and controls agents that already exist, adding policies, sandboxes and shared sessions around them, although Omnigent can also define custom agents in YAML.
What does Omnigent add?
According to its documentation: switching between harnesses with small changes, contextual policies such as cost budgets and approvals, local and cloud sandboxes, and live sessions that teammates can share from the web, desktop or mobile.
Is Omnigent ready for production?
Its README marks it alpha, telemetry is on by default and can be turned off, and native terminal wrappers and sandboxing are limited on Windows. Evaluate it in a test environment first.
Does meta-harness also mean harness optimization?
Yes. A 2026 research paper uses the same name for a system that searches automatically over harness code. The two ideas are different: one orchestrates harnesses, the other improves them.
How current is this page?
Links and project activity were checked in October 2026. The meta-harness idea is new and its vocabulary is still settling, so tools described here may be renamed, merged or archived. Descriptions summarize each project's own documentation and are not endorsements or rankings. Omnigent is marked alpha by its authors.
