Frequently Asked Questions

What is a cloud management platform?

A cloud management platform (CMP) is software that gives one place to provision, govern, monitor and control the cost of workloads across public clouds, private clouds and data centres. Typical features are self-service catalogues, policy and compliance controls, automation and orchestration, and cost reporting.

How is a CMP different from a cloud provider's own console?

Provider tools such as AWS Control Tower or Azure management groups govern one provider, though AWS Systems Manager and Azure Arc extend to other environments. A CMP aims to give a consistent view and policy layer across several providers and on-premises systems.

What should I look for when choosing a CMP?

Check which clouds and on-premises platforms it supports, how it handles self-service and approvals, policy and compliance enforcement, integration with infrastructure-as-code and ITSM tools, and cost visibility. Also ask how much of the stack you will still need your own tooling for.

Do I need a CMP, FinOps tools or infrastructure-as-code?

They overlap but differ in focus. Infrastructure-as-code such as Terraform provisions resources, FinOps tools manage spend, and a CMP adds self-service, governance and operations across them. Many teams combine them, and several CMP suites bundle cost management.

Which open-source options exist?

OpenStack and Apache CloudStack build private or public IaaS clouds, and Cloudify and Terraform orchestrate resources. See the Open Source Cloud Management Tools page for more projects.

How current is this directory?

Links were checked in October 2026. ServiceNow, HPE and HashiCorp return errors to automated link checks and may need a manual click. Vendor descriptions are mostly the vendors' own wording, and products and ownership change often, so confirm details on each vendor's site.
