What Claude Code Plugins Are

5 entries

A plugin is a directory of skills, subagents, hooks, MCP servers and other components that Claude Code installs and loads as one unit, usually from a marketplace. Skills, subagents, hooks and MCP servers also work on their own, so use a plugin when you want several of them packaged together or shared. Enabled plugins add their skill and agent names to every session, which costs context and usage, and they run code as you, so install selectively.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Claude Code plugin?

A directory of skills, subagents, hooks, MCP servers and other components that Claude Code installs and loads as one unit, normally from a marketplace added with the /plugin command.

Do I need a plugin, or is a skill enough?

A skill, subagent, hook or MCP server works on its own. Choose a plugin when you want several of them bundled, versioned and easy to share or install across projects.

Do plugins cost tokens?

Yes. Anthropic's documentation says the names and descriptions of an enabled plugin's skills and agents are in context on every turn, which uses context window and usage even when nothing from the plugin runs. Disable plugins you do not use.

Are plugins safe to install?

A plugin can run code with your user privileges. Read its source, prefer trusted marketplaces, pin versions and follow Anthropic's plugin security guidance before installing.

Where did the ten newer plugins come from?

From a September 2026 Medium article, which is member-only. This page links each project's own repository or site instead of repeating the article, and it marks the one item the article did not link.

How current is this page?

Links and project activity were checked in October 2026. Plugins, skills and marketplaces change quickly, and star counts and feature claims come from the projects themselves, so none are quoted here. A plugin runs with your user privileges, so review its code before installing. Sites that block automated checks are kept and may need a manual click.
