Frequently Asked Questions
What is a web application framework?
A web application framework supplies the structure and common building blocks for a web app, such as routing, templating or components, data handling and security defaults. Front-end frameworks run in the browser, while back-end frameworks run on a server and expose pages or APIs.
What is the difference between a front-end framework and a meta-framework?
A front-end framework or library, such as React, Vue or Svelte, builds the user interface. A meta-framework, such as Next.js, Nuxt, SvelteKit or Astro, adds routing, server rendering, data loading and build tooling on top of one of them.
How do I choose a web framework?
Start from the team's language skills and the type of site: content sites, dashboards and large applications favour different tools. Then compare ecosystem and hiring, rendering options (client, server or static), performance, documentation, upgrade history and how the project is governed.
Which back-end framework should I use?
It depends on the language: Express, NestJS, Hono or Fastify for Node.js, Django, FastAPI or Flask for Python, Rails for Ruby, Laravel for PHP, Spring Boot for Java, ASP.NET Core for .NET and Phoenix for Elixir. All are actively maintained according to their release pages.
Where do the version numbers come from?
From npm, PyPI, GitHub releases and the Node.js release index, checked on 4 November 2026. They change often, so check the project's own release page before upgrading. Beta and pre-release versions are not used.
Does this page cover mobile apps and hosting tools?
No. See Mobile App Development Frameworks for iOS and Android, and Web Application Development Platforms & Tools for hosting, back-end services, build tools and testing.
How current is this page?
Links and versions were checked on 4 November 2026, and all outbound links returned 200 to automated checks. Descriptions follow each project's own pages and are not benchmarks or rankings.
