Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between statistics and probability?
Probability starts from a known model and asks what data it would produce. Statistics works the other way: it starts from data and infers the model or its parameters, with a measure of uncertainty.
Where should a beginner start?
Start with an introductory textbook such as OpenIntro Statistics or OpenStax, practise with free software such as R or Python, and use Seeing Theory or StatQuest for intuition. Move on to regression and then statistical learning.
Should I learn R or Python for statistics?
Both work. R has the broadest range of statistical packages and is common in academic statistics, while Python is common in machine learning and engineering. The free textbooks listed here use one or both.
How does statistics relate to machine learning?
Many machine learning methods are statistical models, and statistical learning theory explains why they generalize. Statistics adds emphasis on inference, uncertainty and study design, including A/B tests and causal inference.
How current is this page?
Links were checked in October 2026. Publisher and journal sites that block automated checks are kept and may need a manual click. This page lists resources rather than teaching statistics, and software descriptions summarize each project's own claims.
