Quick answers.
It divides one physical server into several virtual machines, each running its own operating system, using software called a hypervisor.
A hypervisor is the layer that creates and runs virtual machines. Type 1 hypervisors run directly on the hardware, such as ESXi, Hyper-V and KVM; type 2 hypervisors run on top of another operating system.
Virtual machines each include a full operating system, which gives strong isolation. Containers share the host kernel and are lighter. Many platforms now run both.
Licensing and packaging changes have led many organisations to compare their current platform with open-source and other commercial options.

It combines the Server Virtualization market page on Gartner Peer Insights (Gartner is moving the category to Server Virtualization Platforms) and the shortlist in a server virtualization guide from The CTO Club, plus a few extra platforms.
