Frequently Asked Questions
What is a QRNG?
A quantum random number generator measures a quantum process, such as photon arrival times or vacuum fluctuations, to produce randomness that is physically unpredictable rather than computed from a seed.
Why do banks care about QRNGs?
One-time passwords, session keys and signatures depend on unpredictable randomness. A weak or predictable source can undermine otherwise strong cryptography, so some banks add certified entropy sources.
Is a QRNG the same as QKD?
No. A QRNG generates random numbers, while QKD distributes encryption keys using quantum states. Many vendors sell both, and QRNGs are often used inside QKD systems.
How is QRNG output tested?
Output is checked with statistical test suites and standards such as NIST SP 800-90B, and good designs continuously monitor the entropy source.
Are there Indian QRNG vendors?
QNu Labs in Bengaluru offers the Tropos QRNG, and India's National Quantum Mission supports quantum communication and security work.
