Frequently Asked Questions
What is an IoT device management platform?
An IoT device management platform onboards, organises, monitors and remotely manages fleets of connected devices. Typical features include secure provisioning, configuration, health monitoring, remote commands and over-the-air (OTA) firmware and software updates.
What should I look for when choosing one?
Check how it provisions and authenticates devices, which operating systems and protocols it supports, how OTA updates roll out and roll back, fleet monitoring and debugging, scale and pricing per device, hosting and data-residency options, and integration with your cloud and data pipelines.
What kinds of platforms are listed?
Five groups: cloud and hyperscaler services (AWS, Azure, Alibaba Cloud), enterprise, industrial and carrier platforms (Cumulocity, ThingWorx, Bosch, Verizon, Cisco, Digi), developer-first fleet and OTA tools (Particle, balena, Golioth, Memfault, Mender), open-source platforms (ThingsBoard, Kaa, Thinger.io) and standards bodies.
What is LwM2M?
Lightweight M2M (LwM2M) is a protocol from the Open Mobile Alliance for managing constrained IoT devices and enabling services on them. Several device management platforms support it, so check each vendor's documentation.
How is device management different from an IoT platform?
Device management focuses on the lifecycle of the devices themselves: provisioning, configuration, monitoring and updates. A full IoT platform also covers data ingestion, storage, analytics and application building. See the IoT Platforms page on this site for the broader category.
Why is Pelion not listed?
Pelion's current website focuses on its IoT SIM and multi-network connectivity, so it is left out until its device-management offering is confirmed. Google Cloud IoT Core, which Google retired in 2023, is also not listed.
How current is this page?
Links were checked on 4 November 2026. Cisco, Memfault, Ericsson, Soracom and the Connectivity Standards Alliance returned 403 to automated checks, which looks like bot blocking, so those links may need a manual click. Descriptions follow each vendor's own pages and are not independent rankings or benchmarks. This page was compiled from vendor sources, not copied from any third-party list.
