What is an internal developer platform?

An IDP is a self-service layer built by a platform team that gives developers environments, deployments and infrastructure on demand, with guardrails and golden paths built in.

How is an IDP different from a developer portal?

The platform provides the capabilities and automation; the portal is the interface, a catalog, documentation and self-service actions. Backstage, Port and OpsLevel are portals, while Humanitec and Qovery are platforms.

Should we build or buy?

Buying shortens time to value; building on open-source blocks such as Crossplane, Kratix and Backstage gives more control but needs a dedicated platform team.

Do I need Kubernetes?

Not necessarily. Many platforms target Kubernetes, but others deploy to virtual machines or managed container services.

Where do Argo CD and Crossplane fit?

Argo CD handles GitOps delivery and Crossplane provisions cloud resources through Kubernetes APIs; both are common components underneath a platform.

What is new in Crossplane 2.x?

Crossplane 2.0, announced on 12 August 2025, made composite and managed resources namespaced, let compositions include any Kubernetes resource, and added an Operation type for one-off, scheduled and event-driven day-two tasks such as upgrades and backups. The project says it keeps backward compatibility with the vast majority of v1.x configurations. On its GitHub releases page in October 2026, v2.4.3 (22 October) was the newest stable release; v2.4, released on 20 August, now watches required resources, runs scale-to-zero providers, and ships the CLI only from cli.crossplane.io.

What is the current Argo CD release?

On GitHub in October 2026 Argo CD v3.5.6 was marked latest (20 October), with v3.4.12 and v3.3.17 released the same week. Argo CD makes a minor release every three months and patches only the three most recent minor versions. The 3.4 to 3.5 upgrade notes say Helm was upgraded to 4.2.0, so Helm 4 now renders all charts and an app's helm.version v3 setting is ignored, plain-HTTP OCI registries need --insecure-oci-force-http, UI extensions must be rebuilt for React 19, and GnuPG signature verification was replaced by Source Integrity. Argo is a CNCF graduated project.
