Frequently Asked Questions
What is an edge device cloud platform?
A cloud service that connects to fleets of edge devices, such as gateways, sensors and industrial controllers, to onboard them, deploy software, collect data, apply updates and monitor their health from one place.
How is it different from an edge computing platform?
Edge computing platforms focus on where workloads run. Edge device cloud platforms focus on the link to the devices: identity, connectivity, remote management and over-the-air updates, usually with a cloud back end.
Which should I choose, a cloud provider service or an independent platform?
Cloud provider services integrate tightly with that provider's analytics and AI. Independent and open-source platforms such as balena, ZEDEDA, KubeEdge and EdgeX Foundry avoid lock-in and work across clouds.
Why are over-the-air updates important?
Edge devices are numerous and remote, so security patches and new software have to be pushed safely and rolled back if they fail. OTA tools such as Mender and balena exist for this.
Which entries changed or were left out?
ThingWorx's PTC address now redirects to Velotic. IBM Edge Application Manager, Huawei Cloud IoT, Alibaba IoT and NVIDIA Fleet Command links did not load or no longer point to a product page, so they are not listed.
