What Is Database Security?

7 entries

Database security protects data and the systems that store it through authentication, authorization, encryption, auditing, masking, vulnerability management and secure configuration. Typical threats include SQL injection, stolen or over-privileged credentials, misconfigured network exposure, unpatched software and insider misuse. Descriptions below follow each project's or vendor's own pages and are not rankings; release facts come from GitHub.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is database security?

The practices and tools that protect data in databases: authentication and authorization, encryption in transit and at rest, auditing, masking, vulnerability management and secure configuration.

How do I prevent SQL injection?

Use parameterized queries or prepared statements, validate input, avoid building SQL from strings, and give application accounts least privilege. The OWASP SQL Injection Prevention Cheat Sheet explains the techniques.

What is transparent data encryption?

Encryption of data files at rest, handled by the database, so stolen disks or backups are unreadable without keys. SQL Server, Oracle and MySQL editions offer TDE, and Percona provides pg_tde for PostgreSQL. It does not protect data from authorized database users.

What is the difference between encryption at rest and column-level encryption?

At-rest encryption protects storage, while column or field-level encryption, such as SQL Server Always Encrypted or MongoDB Queryable Encryption, keeps selected fields encrypted so even administrators cannot read them.

What is database activity monitoring?

Auditing and alerting on queries and privileged activity to detect misuse and meet compliance requirements. Native options include pgAudit and SQL Server Audit, and vendors such as IBM Guardium and Oracle Audit Vault offer centralized monitoring.

How should database credentials be managed?

Avoid hard-coded passwords, rotate credentials, use IAM or short-lived dynamic credentials such as Vault database secrets engines, and restrict network access. See the Secrets Management Tools page.

How current is this page?

Links and release facts were checked on 31 October 2026. The MySQL documentation returned 403 to automated checks. Links that returned 404 or did not resolve were dropped. Descriptions follow each project's or vendor's own pages and are not rankings. sqlmap and similar tools should only be used on systems you are authorized to test.
