Frequently Asked Questions

What is data pipeline orchestration?

Data pipeline orchestration coordinates the steps of a pipeline: when each runs, what it depends on, how failures are retried, and how runs are monitored. It sits above the individual tools that extract, load and transform data. A scheduler that only starts jobs at set times is the simplest form; orchestrators add dependencies, retries, backfills, alerting and observability.

How is orchestration different from transformation and integration?

Integration tools move data between systems and transformation tools such as dbt reshape it, while the orchestrator decides when each of those steps runs and in what order. In practice an orchestrator such as Airflow, Dagster or Prefect triggers an ingestion job, then a dbt run, then downstream checks.

Which open-source orchestrator should I choose?

Apache Airflow has the largest established ecosystem. Dagster, Prefect, Kestra, Mage and Flyte take different approaches to authoring: Dagster describes itself as a data orchestrator, Kestra uses a declarative language, and Argo Workflows is Kubernetes-native. Try your own pipelines in a short pilot, because authoring style, deployment model and team skills usually decide the choice.

Should I self-host or use a managed service?

Managed services such as Astronomer, Amazon MWAA and Google's managed Airflow service remove much of the infrastructure work and are a common route for Airflow. Self-hosting gives control and avoids service fees but needs operations effort. Orchestration built into a data platform, such as Databricks Lakeflow Jobs, Snowflake Tasks or Azure Data Factory, can be simplest when your work stays inside that platform.

What changed recently?

Google Cloud Composer is now presented as Managed Service for Apache Airflow. According to PyPI and GitHub in October 2026, Prefect 3.9.0 (21 October), Argo Workflows v4.1.6 (22 October), Kestra v2.0.7 (20 October), Dagster 1.13.26 (9 October) and Apache Airflow 3.3.2 (17 September) have recent releases. TechTarget reported that the Fivetran and dbt Labs merger completed on 1 June 2026.

How current is this directory?

Links were checked on 23 October 2026, and release information comes from PyPI and GitHub on that date. GitHub dates are taken from release feeds and may differ by a few days. Vendor descriptions are mostly the vendors' own wording, so confirm details on each project's site.
