What Is a Data Mesh?
6 entriesData mesh is a socio-technical approach built on four principles described by Zhamak Dehghani: domain-oriented decentralised data ownership, data as a product, a self-serve data platform, and federated computational governance. Technology supports each principle: standards and tooling for data products and contracts, a platform that lets domains publish and consume data without a central team, and automated governance, catalogs and lineage. It is an approach, not a product, and it is often compared with data fabric.
Data Products & Data Contracts
10 entriesA data product has an owner, an interface, documentation and guarantees. Open specifications describe them in a vendor-neutral, machine-readable way so that platforms, catalogs and tests can use the same definition.
Self-Serve Data Platform
13 entriesThe platform lets domain teams build, publish and run data products with little central help: storage and compute, orchestration, infrastructure as code, a developer portal and a place to register and discover products.
Federated Computational Governance
18 entriesGlobal rules agreed by domains are enforced automatically through the platform: catalogs make data discoverable, policy as code controls access, quality tests and observability check promises, and lineage shows where data came from.
Cross-Domain Query & Federation
6 entriesConsumers combine data products from several domains without copying everything into one store.
Streaming & Event-Driven Data Products
4 entriesEvents can be data products too, shared through streaming platforms.
Cloud & Platform Capabilities
6 entriesCloud platforms offer building blocks for mesh-style data sharing. See Data Mesh Solutions for the full vendor comparison.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a data mesh?
A decentralised approach to analytics data based on four principles: domain-oriented ownership, data as a product, a self-serve data platform and federated computational governance.
What technologies does a data mesh need?
Standards and tools for data products and contracts, a self-serve platform for storage, compute and orchestration, catalogs and policy as code for governance, lineage and quality tooling, and ways to query across domains.
What is the difference between a data contract and a data product?
A data product is the packaged dataset with an owner, interface and guarantees. A data contract is the machine-readable agreement that describes its schema, quality and terms, such as in the Open Data Contract Standard.
How does a data mesh differ from a data fabric?
A data fabric connects data with metadata-driven integration and virtualization, while a data mesh organises ownership around domains. They can be combined; see Data Fabric vs. Data Mesh.
Do I need a special product to build a data mesh?
No. Data mesh is an approach, and many teams assemble it from open standards and general-purpose tools. Vendors offer platforms that package parts of it; see Data Mesh Solutions.
How current is this page?
Links were checked in October 2026. The four data mesh principles follow Zhamak Dehghani's articles on martinfowler.com; descriptions of tools and standards summarize each project's own pages. Data mesh is an organisational and architectural approach, not a product, and tool names, ownership and standards governance change, so confirm details on each site. This page covers the building blocks; the Data Mesh Solutions page compares 28 vendors. Listing is not an endorsement. Sites that block automated checks, such as DataHub, Dremio, Snowflake and O'Reilly, are kept and may need a manual click.
What is new in data mesh technologies in 2026?
The Open Data Contract Standard v3.2.0 (8 September 2026) added context for AI systems, variables, synonyms and nine new server types, and the Open Data Product Standard v1.1.0 followed on the same day. Apache Iceberg 1.12.0 (30 September), Delta Lake v4.4.1 (5 October), Trino 484 (16 October) and Open Policy Agent v1.21.3 (19 October) were among the newest releases on GitHub. Marquez's newest GitHub release is 0.50.0 from October 2024, so check its activity before adopting it. SAP agreed to acquire Dremio on 4 May 2026, and Fivetran and dbt Labs completed their merger on 1 June 2026.
