Frequently Asked Questions
What is a content services platform (CSP)?
A content services platform is software for managing documents and other unstructured content, with capture, search, workflow, security, retention and integration, available as services that other applications can use. Gartner introduced the term as the successor to enterprise content management (ECM).
What is the difference between a CSP and ECM?
ECM described large, monolithic suites. A CSP delivers content capabilities as modular, API-based services, often in the cloud, that connect to line-of-business applications. Many ECM vendors now call their products content services platforms.
What is CMIS?
Content Management Interoperability Services is an OASIS standard that defines a common API for working with content repositories, so applications can connect to different vendors' systems.
What is the difference between a CSP, document management and file sharing?
Document management adds versions, metadata and check-in/out to files. File sharing tools such as Dropbox focus on storage and collaboration. A CSP adds records, retention, workflow, capture and governance across content, and some listed products combine these roles.
Which options are open source?
Nextcloud and Mayan EDMS describe themselves as open source. Check each project's licence and support options before adopting.
How do I choose a content services platform?
Compare repository scale, workflow and capture, records and compliance, integrations with your ERP, CRM and Microsoft or Google workspace, security, deployment model and total cost. Pilot with your own content types.
What other directories relate to content services?

How current is this page?
Outbound links were checked on 3 November 2026. Box and NetDocuments return 403, OpenText returns HTTP 444 and the Microsoft 365 page did not respond to automated checks; they are kept and may need a manual click. Vendors rename, merge and retire products often, and the duplicate Objective entries were merged, so confirm details on the vendor's site.
