What is container monitoring?
Container monitoring collects metrics, logs and events from containers, the hosts they run on and the orchestrator, to track health, resource use and performance.
Why are containers harder to monitor than servers?
Containers are short-lived, move between hosts and share resources, so monitoring has to discover them automatically and tag data by service rather than by machine.
Where do container metrics come from?
Sources include the container runtime and tools such as cAdvisor, the Docker Engine API, the Kubernetes metrics pipeline (Metrics Server and kube-state-metrics) and OpenTelemetry agents.
Prometheus and Grafana or a commercial platform?
Prometheus with Grafana is the common open-source stack and gives full control. Commercial platforms add hosted storage, automatic discovery, alerting and support, at a cost.
